Thick oil soils Mississippi shore as storm looms

The wake of a ship is visible after it cut through the surface oil near the site of the Deep water Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico June 24, 2010.

The economic and environmental condition have been brake down along with the U.S.Galf Cost due to oil spill from April 20,2010. It makes a read alart to fisheries, tourism and wild life.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said that the Tropical depression Alex moved into the southwestern gulf, prompting the closure of two key Mexican oil ports, and was likely on Monday to regain tropical storm status.

The British newspaper the Sunday Times reported that BP's drilling of relief wells, intended to plug its leaking deep-sea well, is going more quickly than expected and the company could stop the flow of oil in mid-July. That would be about two weeks earlier than BP's current public projection of early August.

The newspaper cited sources with knowledge of the operation. A BP spokesperson declined to comment on the report and referred to a company statement on Friday that the two relief wells -- begun on May 2 and May 16 -- were estimated to take approximately three months to finish.

Louisiana's fragile wetlands have been hardest hit by the oil but Mississippi had escaped damage until Sunday, although some oil had tainted its barrier islands. Oil has also come ashore in Alabama and Florida's Gulf coast.

Oil from the spill hit two tourist beaches at Ocean Springs, about 10 miles east of Biloxi, Mississippi, and a beach used by fishermen close to an inland marsh.

Mississippi state officials and the U.S. Coast Guard, who said they expect more oil to arrive, were waiting on BP contractors to start cleaning up.

"We cannot clean up or catch the oil until BP gets here. They have all of our people," said Earl Etheridge, a spokesman for Mississippi's Department of Environmental Quality.

ALEX AWAITS

Alex, the first named storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, had sustained winds of 35 mph and was about 55 miles south-southwest of Campeche. The system was moving west-northwest at 9 mph.

Even if it misses the spill area, large waves could hamper clean-up efforts from Louisiana to Florida from the spill.

Shell Oil Co evacuated nonessential workers from production platforms and drilling rigs in U.S.-regulated areas of the Gulf oil fields on Saturday, anticipating Alex's impact, and on Sunday shut subsea production at two platforms.

Meteorologists predict a very active Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

The U.S. government estimates that up to 60,000 barrels of oil (2.5 million gallons/9.5 million liters) per day are spewing from BP's damaged well on the seabed about a mile below the surface.

While awaiting the completion of the relief wells to finally plug the leak, BP has been using two oil collection systems to prevent some of the oil from its ruptured well from spewing into the sea. BP said on Sunday its crews had collected or burned off 22,750 barrels of oil on Saturday.

Equipment going to the leak site this week could raise daily collection to 53,000 barrels, officials say, and a review is scheduled of a system that may boost it to 80,000 barrels.

The oil spill was a topic at a weekend meeting in Canada of leaders of the Group of 20 world's biggest economies.

G20 sources said the summit communique included a reference to the spill and urged the sharing of best practices to protect marine life, prevent accidents and deal with the consequences when accidents occur.

Shares of BP have been savaged since the crisis started and fell another 6 percent to a 14-year low on Friday.

The costs to BP include but are not limited to a $20 billion compensation fund it set up under U.S. pressure. BP said it has paid out $2.35 billion so far in clean-up and compensation costs.

Blood test gives pointer to early menopause

A simple blood test can give an accurate pointer of when a woman will hit the menopause, according to research to be presented at a fertility conference here on Monday.

If confirmed by other scientists, the test devised by Iranian doctors would be a boon for women seeking to plan when to start a family, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) said in a press release on Sunday.

The test is based on levels of so-called anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), which controls the development of egg-making cells in the ovary.

A team led by Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani, a professor at the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, took blood samples at three yearly intervals among 266 women aged 20 to 49 who were enrolled in a different project launched in 1998.

The women also had physical examinations every three years.

The investigators developed a statistical model that looked at changes in AMH levels and predicted when menopause would take effect.

Sixty-three of the women reached menopause during the study's duration, and the predictions were extremely accurate, Ramezani Tehrani said.

"The average difference between the predicted age at menopause using our model and the women's actual age was only a third of a year," she said.

The maximum margin of error was three to four years.

If a 20-year-old woman has 4.1 nanograms per millitre of AMH, or less, in her blood sample, she is a higher risk of early menopause, meaning before the age of 45.

In contrast, AMH levels of at least 4.5 nanograms per millilitre of AMH at the age of 20, followed by 3.8 nanograms at the age of 25 and 2.9 nanograms at the age of 30 suggest that menopause will occur beyond the age of 50.

"Our findings indicate that AMH is capable of specifying a woman's reproductive status more realistically than chronological age per se," said Ramezani Tehrani.

Further work is needed among a larger group of women in their twenties to confirm the accuracy of the technique, she added.

The ESHRE conference, gathering thousands of European fertility specialists, continues in Rome until Wednesday.

New Diabetes Drug Performs Well In Clinical Trial

New typs of drugs being developed to treat Type 2 diabetes showed the potential to help lower blood glucose levels through a different mechanism than current treatments, according to new studies released at a major diabetes conference.

At present the most advanced drug in the class, dapagliflozin, is being developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) and AstraZeneca PLC (AZN, AZN.LN).

The product is designed to lower blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes by increasing the amount of glucose excreted in the urine of people with diabetes. The companies hope to file for U.S. Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency approvals of the product later this year.

Dapagliflozin as well as canagliflozin, a similar product being developed by Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), inhibit sodium-glucose transporter-2 system used by the kidneys to filter and reabsorb glucose circulating in the blood. The products are known as SGLT2 inhibitors.

Data from an advanced Phase 3 study of dapagliflozin involving 807 patients with diabetes who were on insulin showed the drug helped lower A1C blood hemoglobin levels, a common measurement of blood glucose, compared to those receiving a placebo. Some patients in the study were also on other oral diabetes drugs.

Separately, a mid-stage, Phase 2 study of canagliflozin also showed the drug helped lower blood glucose levels in study that involved 451 patients over 12 weeks that was designed to look at different doses of the drug. Johnson & Johnson has started more advanced Phase 3 studies of canagliflozin that will involve more than 10,000 patients.

Both studies were presented Saturday at the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting in Orlando. Diabetes affects about 24 million Americans and is characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by the body's inability to either make or properly use insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease and is often associated with weight gain and older age. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease often diagnosed in children in which the body's immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin.

The dapagliflozin study was lead by John Wilding, a professor of medicine and the head of the diabetes and endocrinology clinical research unit at University Hospital Aintree in the United Kingdom.

The study enrolled 807 people with type 2 diabetes whose disease wasn't considered well controlled. People in the study had an average A1C level of 8.5%. (People without diabetes typically have an A1C level of less than 6%.)

Patients were divided into four separate treatment groups for 24 weeks. Three groups were given three different doses of dapagliflozin ranging from 2.5 to 10 milligrams daily. One group was given a placebo treatment.

After 24 weeks, patients receiving the lowest dose of dapagliflozin had an average drop in A1C levels of 0.75%, which is considered statistically significant. Patients receiving the highest dose of the drug had an average decline of 0.9% while patients in the placebo group had a decline of 0.3%. The study is still continuing and will last for two years.

Wilding said there was a higher rate of urinary tract infections and genital infections in the study, which could be a side effect of having more glucose released in the urine. (People without diabetes typically don't have sugar or glucose in their urine.)

Higher rates of hypoglycemia, or blood sugar falling too low, were seen among patients treated with dapagliflozin compared to patients not receiving the drug. Hypoglycemia, which can be severe and even fatal, is a side effect of many diabetes treatments including insulin. Wilding said that most cases of hypoglycemia were considered mild and that the most serious cases of hypoglycemia affected about 1% of patients and were split between the placebo and the dapagliflozin groups.

Reports of hypoglycemia seen in the dapagliflozin treatment groups compared to a placebo were 55% for dapagliflozin 2.5 milligrams, 47.6% for dapagliflozin 5 mg, 44.9% for dapagliflozin 10 mg and 42.1% for a placebo.

The study also showed patients in the dapagliflozin group lost slightly more weight than patients in the placebo group and had a drop in blood pressure.

Other companies developing SGLT2 inhibitors include Boehringer Ingelheim and Astellas Pharma Inc (4503.TO).

Kagan's life an undeviating course to high court

WASHINGTON — For all the ink devoted to Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan lately, it may be her own words that best explain her success at charting an undeviating course to the front steps of the high court.

She's excelled by dint of hard work, smarts and what she describes as good "situation sense" — the ability to size up her surroundings and figure out what truly matters, as she put it during confirmation hearings for her last job, as President Barack Obama's solicitor general, the government's top lawyer.

It's what allowed Kagan to channel the thinking of legal giant Thurgood Marshall when she was a "27-year-old pipsqueak" clerk to the justice.

It's what allowed Kagan to navigate through the land mines of government policy on abortion, tobacco and other contentious issues as an adviser to President Bill Clinton.

It's what allowed Kagan to thrive as the first female dean of Harvard Law School and even foster detente within its famously fractious faculty. continue.....

Sandip Soparrkar

Sandip Soparkar is a well-known ballroom dancer. He introduced professional salsa dance courses in Mumbai.

Sandip started dancing at the age of 16. He went to Germany to learn dance. He conducts dance lessons in Mumbai and Pune. He teaches ballroom dances like Cha Cha, Jive, Latin, Rumba, Tango and the Waltz. Initially he was a model but later he shifted his career from modeling to dancing.

He has choreographed for several Bollywood films. His first assignment was in the film Zubeida (2001). He has also choreographed Aishwarya Rai in the film Kyun Ho Gaya Na (2004).

He also choreographed the dances in the sangeet ceremony of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai’s much publicized wedding in April 2007.

Sandip was the performance mentor of the Sunsilk Gang of Girls – Spotlight Mein, a singing reality show on Zoom Television channel. He is one of the judges of the show Chak De, a singing and dancing competition on 9X Entertainment Television channel.

Internationally-renowned choreographer Sandip Soparrkar, who has done choreography for films like “Zubeida”, “Kyun Ho Gaya Na”, “Holiday” and most recently “Kites”, says he finds Bollywood dance weird.

“I feel Bollywood dance is weird. It is a mix of all dance forms where you probably don’t know what you are doing. Once you do a salsa step and then you do a B-boying – it is hard to understand what an individual wants to show,” Soparrkar told IANS.

He is currently in the judges’ panel of Zee TV’s children’s dance reality show “Dance India Dance Li’l Masters” along with choreographer-turned-filmmaker Farah Khan.

Soparrkar has worked with international singers like Madonna, Britney Spears and Shakira. He has even choreographed for Hollywood director Rob Marshall’s film “Nine” with Penelope Cruz, Daniel-Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren.

“Madonna is really energetic. I am amazed to see the energy with which she performs on stage at the age of 51. Britney Spears is extremely professional and Shakira is very dedicated,” he said.

The choreographer feels that Hollywood celebrities are more professional than Bollywood stars.

…. The pair tied the knot in New Orleans, in front of his parents Jamie and Lynne and Britney and Jamie Lynn. A source said: “It was a really sweet. Only close family and a few friends attended. It was a great way to ring in the New Year.”

Sandip Soparrkar

Sandip Soparrkar came in light when he choreographed the pop-divas of west, Madonna, Shakira and Britney Spears and is presently having a great time judging the kids on Dance India Dance, along side Farah Khan. Very few know that he is also the first Indian to have been certified by the ‘Ballroom Dance Teachers Training School’ in Bonn, Germany In an interview, he spoke highly of Indian kids in to dancing and also shares surprises he has got on the show.

So, are you enjoying judging DID?

Yes, it has been fabulously beautiful experience from the first day of auditions to wild card, it has been amazing. These kids are just not the good dancers but they are also very well behaved.

Have these kids surprise you?

Many kids have surprised us on the show by their dancing. At times it is so unbelievable to see that a five year old could dance better than 25year old. Kolkata kids were so good with classicals, and they were also passionately promoting the various classical dance forms on the show. One thing that I was not expecting from Delhi that many fathers would come to support their daughters during the auditions. I was expecting other way round, that mothers would come along with their daughter. In fact, I don’t remember in which city, mostly Jaipur, there was a kid whose 52 family members had come along to cheer for their child.

When talking of surprises, how it feels to have received countless roses from a family member of one of the contestants?

It was quiet embarrassing but at the same time it was fun. The roses kept coming on and on. I have done reality shows in past so these kinds of surprises you expect, people tell you that they like you and ask you to marry and all, but on a kid show I was least expecting.

You said you were least expecting from Delhi fathers to support their kids for dancing, so are you talking from you personal experience?

I come from an army background so my father always wanted me to join the service but, I was always in to dancing, so when I spoke to him about my penchant for dancing and also for the enrollment in a dance academy, his first reaction was that we’ll buy a flat in the amount of your fees. Later, he agreed when he recognized my passion for dancing.

Do you empathize with any of these kids on the show?

Yes, there is one boy, his name is Adhar. He is only 11 but is as tall as any 15-16 year would be and is also broad in size. I also use to be taller than the people of my age when I was young. You feel out of place when you are competing with kids who are your age but look half your age. Always there will be a kind of confusion when you are dancing. You are 11 year old and look grown-up, then people says itna bada hoke bhi bachchon jaisa dance kar raha hai…and at the same time you cannot count yourself in grown-ups also.

Coming back to the show, who'll do you see in top five?

It is too early to judge, may be in a weeks time I will be able to tell you. As of now, we have just got done with wild card round. Once when we get our top ten contestants and the votings begin, we’ll get to know who all the popular contestants are in the show.

How much do you personally approve of voting system?

It is good concept. Like, I have been following the voting system of DID’s last two seasons and I think they are quiet transparent. Sad part of voting system is that if the contestant is from south he might not get good number of votes because Zee is more popular in north than south. That ways there could be a partiality but after all it’s a game.

Even after having worked in Kites with the stars like Hrithik Roshan and Kangna, you recently stated that Hollywood actor are more professional than Bollywood actors and also you said, you find Bollywood dancing “weird”.

No I didn’t mean that, I was misinterpreted. All I meant saying that Indian actors’ working pattern is different from that of Hollywood actors. It was nothing on anyone’s professionalism. About Bollywood dancing I said that since it is mix of all the kinds of dance forms ranging from hip hop, salsa, waltz, cha cha cha etc…it is hard to explain, thus it is weird for me.

Farah is queen of Bollywood and you have your expertise in Ballroom dancing, so how do you’ll judge the contestants.

We both respect each other’s space and judgments. There has been time when she has liked someone’s performance and I didn’t, but we don’t doubt each other’s judgment. We judge the show from our respective point of view. I judge the contestants for techniques and she looks at the entire presentation.

Which was the toughest judgment on the show so far?

Last time when we had to declare Anuraag’s ouster from the competition, we both were in tears. We cannot be partial, and so were torn between the good dancers and our favourite contestant.
