Was Sahil threatening Rinky ? A Report

Kohinoor Mandal, mother of model Priyanshi Chowdhury aka Rinky who was found dead in her flat on Thursday evening, said her final conversation with her daughter was on the night of October 24. "Rinky was not depressed at all. She asked when I was planning to retire from my job with the West Bengal government. She was planning to buy a plot in a few years and settle with me in Kolkata. Why would a girl who was doing so well in her career commit suicide? She had told me that Sahil used to assault her," Kohinoor said.

Rinky's mother also said that she had met Sahil once. "I had bumped into Sahil when I was visiting my daughter earlier this year. He was hanging around in the kitchen. I asked Rinky about him and she said he was a good friend. I warned her against letting young men into her house when she was alone"

Weather clears for Indonesia

Indonesia ramped up aid operations Sunday for victims of last week's devastating tsunami, as the toll climbed despite the discovery of 135 traumatized villagers who were feared dead.

Monsoonal storms and high seas have plagued efforts to reach disaster-struck coastal villages since they were crushed by the three-meter (10-foot) wall of water late on Monday night, after an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. But aid chiefs said the weather had cleared early Sunday and more helicopters were on the way to ferry aid to isolated communities accessible only by sea or air. It's a clear, bright day today so we hope to be able to reach all the isolated villages," relief official Arif Rahman said."Relief distributions are running smoothly," said West Sumatra provincial disaster management head Harmensyah.

Bottled water, canned food, medicine and tents finally arrived by air Sunday to isolated Tumalei village on North Pagai island, where its 200 residents had been surviving on anything they could scavenge in the forests."We ate bananas, yam, coconuts we found in the jungle," a villager told AFP.As rescuers slowly fanned out across the worst-hit islands of North and South Pagai, the death count rose with the discovery of ever more bodies strewn on beaches or wedged under the debris.

The official toll climbed to 449, with another 96 missing."We're still looking for them... there's a high likelihood they are dead, mostly buried in sand," relief official Joskamatir said of those still unaccounted for. Many of the dead are believed to have been dragged out to sea with the receding waters or buried beneath the sand.
But in a rare piece of good news, 135 people were found alive on Saturday, hiding on high ground and too afraid of another wave to return to their shattered villages."There were also other individuals who have come to the temporary shelters alive. There were also others who returned to their villages," disaster management official Agus Prayitno said.Emergency services in Indonesia are being further stretched by the continued eruption of Mount Merapi in central Java, where some 50,000 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters.

Terrified residents fled in panic when the archipelago's most active volcano convulsed again just after midnight on Friday, threatening a repeat of explosions on Tuesday that claimed at least 36 lives. No one was killed in the latest eruption, but hospital staff reported that two people died in the chaotic rush to escape, including a woman who was hit by a truck.

Volcanic ash rained down on the Central Java provincial capital of Yogyakarta 26 kilometres (16 miles) away from the crater, shutting the airport for over an hour.Government volcanologist Subandrio said more eruptions were likely and warned evacuees not to tempt fate by going home too soon."We will even have to evaluate whether we need to widen the exclusion zone because we should not downplay the threat -- Mount Merapi is extremely dangerous," he said. Many displaced people returned to the slopes of 2,914-meter Merapi, a sacred landmark in Javanese tradition whose name means "Mountain of Fire", to tend to their livestock during the day.Extra police and troops were posted at checkpoints on roads leading into the 10-kilometer exclusion zone, and officials reported new arrivals at the shelters following Saturday's eruption."People have voluntarily chosen to stay further away as they were traumatized and wanted to avoid the danger zone," one village administrator, Suranto, told AFP.Australia and the United States have pledged aid worth a total of three million US dollars while the European Commission released 1.5 million euros (two million US dollars) for victims of both disasters.Indonesia straddles a region known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire", with scores of active volcanoes and major fault lines. Almost 170,000 Indonesians were killed in the 2004 Asian tsunami.

Big B On Top

Bachchan seems to have beaten the heroes of the younger generation – Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan seems to have beaten the heroes of the younger generation – Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, at least on the small screen. Bachchan, who is doing a phenomenal job as the host of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' had tough competition what with the popular Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar also occupying prime time slots on other channels.

The presence of big stars as hosts on the small screen paved way for a mini TRP battle, and Big B seems to be leading so far. According to reports, 'KBC' - Sony - opened with a 6.2 Television Viewership Rating (TVR), while Salman's 'Bigg Boss' - Colors - fell short and clocked 4.8 TVRs. Akshay Kumar's 'Master Chef' - Star Plaus - failed to add the much desired spice in comparison with 2.6 TVRs.

A unit member of Star Plus' 'Master Chef' said, "It's not a loss for us. Of course, every reality show has different sensibilities and formats, and the three that you are comparing cater to widely different range of target groups, each with a completely different set of demographics. Every show has its own place, every host his own seat and every channel its own goal."

To shoot his new movie Rockstar, the Bollywood heartthrob didn't only have to dress up as one, he also had to fly out to Prague! and he told us, "Next I have a film called Raajneeti, it's a political thriller, it should be out sometime end of May then I have Anjaana Anjaani in July and then I'm starting a film called Rockstar, it stars me and I think a new girl."

Paul the Octopus died in Germany

Frankfurt (Germany) : Paul , the aquarium octopus which correctly predicted the results of eight World Cup football matches in succession this summer, the tentacled tipster died on Tuesday, 26 October.

It said it would erect a memorial to the little brown octopus whose astounding predictive powers turned him into the true star of the tournament, eclipsing the likes of Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Thomas Müller and Andres Iniesta. Spain, which won the tournament, embraced "Pulpo Paul" as a hero.

Paul had reached the octopus old age of 2 1/2 years and died in his tank on Tuesday morning at the Sea Life aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen, spokeswoman Ariane Vieregge said.

Paul correctly tipped the outcome of all seven of Germany’s games. He made his predictions by opening the lid of one of two clear plastic boxes, each containing a mussel and bearing a team flag.

The octopus seemed to be in good shape when he was checked late Monday, but he did not make it through the night. He died of natural causes, Vieregge said.

“We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed,” Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll said in a statement.

The aquarium has not yet decided how best to commemorate their most famous resident, he said.

“We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds, and erect a modest permanent shrine,” Porwoll said.

After rising to global prominence during the World Cup in South Africa in June and July, Paul retired from the predictions business after the final between Spain and the Netherlands — correctly picking Spain — and returned to his primary role of intriguing children who attend the aquarium.—AP

Ranbir drives the girls mad

Ranbir Kapoor was spotted driving on a busy Mumbai road with his car windows rolled down.

While he enjoyed the breeze, the girls on the road went into a tizzy. One industry sort tried to reason with Ranbir and ask him to roll the glass up because it could lead to a stampede, but RK didn't oblige.

Guess actors shouldn't always hide behind dark glasses. A touch of reality helps on many levels.

Woman faints during Puja, raped by doc in ICU

NAVI MUMBAI: A visit to a Durga Puja pandal led to a nightmarish rape ordeal for a 30-year-old married woman in Vashi. The Bengali devotee, who had gone to the pandal on the premises of ICL School in Sector 15 on Saturday night, fainted when the festivities were going on and was admitted to Lotus Hospital in the vicinity where she was raped by the doctor on duty.

The Vashi police have arrested the 26-year-old resident medical officer (RMO), Dr Vishal Vanne, who reportedly raped the semi-conscious woman inside the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The investigating officer, inspector Rajkumar Chaphekar, told TOI, "The accused doctor, Vanne, who specialises in ayurveda and stays in Ghansoli, took advantage of the woman's helpless situation which was caused by low BP, and raped her on her ICU bed between 2 am and 5 am."

Chaphekar added that the female patient could comprehend that she was being violated, but due to her semi-conscious state could not cry out for help. A patient lying on the adjoining bed was fast asleep when the crime took place, while the woman's husband was sleeping in another part of the hospital.

"From initial questioning, we have come to know that the accused was employed at Lotus Hospital since last December. He has admitted to the crime, and we have also collected forensic data from the victim's clothes and bed as evidence," said Chaphekar.

Vanne will be produced before the local court on Monday, added the IO.

The zonal deputy commissioner of police, Ashok Dudhe, said that the police acted immediately on the complaint early on Sunday morning, after the devastated woman managed to tell her husband about it.

"Under the guidance of DCP Dudhe and ACP Purshottam Karad, we immediately started our investigations and quickly nabbed the accused, thus preventing a law and order situation in the locality," said Chaphekar.

Other senior medical employees of Lotus Hospital are also being questioned to know why the security was so lapse in a critical unit like the ICU. The hospital has been in existence for the last two years.

When TOI called up the hospital to speak to its representative, this correspondent was told that none were available for comment, as they all had been summoned by the Vashi police.

It brings a great shame to the medical fraternity and raises questions about the sanctity of protocol involving male doctors and female patients.

10 things men should never ask to women

David DeAngelo, author of "Double Your Dating", says there is nothing worse than making mistakes that will later be regretted and one way to avoid them is to remember the following, Bullz-Eye.com reported.

First of all , a man should never ask a woman if he can kiss her, as she will only say, a man should never "ask" for a kiss.

Asking her for a kiss will only make a man look like a boy, which is what a woman is not interested in, and even if she says "yes", it could mean she is just being polite, while on the inside her attraction meter will read a firm, "No".

Secondly , a man should never ask a woman if he can take her out on a date sometime, as she would like to be with a man who is a leader and in control, not someone who asks her permission to hit on her.

A man should confidently ask a woman out, by simply saying, "We should hang out... what's your number?" or tell her about a specific place he wants to take her to.

Thirdly , a man should never brag about the car he has or the kind of house he lives in, as it would seem like he is trying hard to impress her.

Women would be far more impressed by a man's material possessions if he does not mention them in conversation.

The fourth thing a man should never ask a woman is what she wants to do for the night, as she likes a "man with a plan".

The man needs to have a game plan before he calls her, so as to ensure that she will not be burdened with having to think about what to do.

Fifthly, a man should never ask a woman if she likes him, as this is one phrase that turns off a woman completely.

He should just assume that she likes him, and never ask the question, as it would look like he has no confidence.

The sixth tip is that a man should never ask a woman why she never answered his message, as one, it would show that he cared she did not reply back, and two, it would give her a guilt trip, which is seen as insecurity by women.

The seventh tip is that a man should never ask a woman how men she has slept with, as this shows that he is suffering from insecurity.

The eighth tip is that a man should never hint at a future date with a woman he has just met, as she not only wants but needs a guy who is somewhat of a "challenge", and will lose interest if she senses she has won.

The ninth tip is that a man should never end a phone conversation with a woman with a "next step", as firstly it would kill any spontaneity by being predictable, and secondly he would kill any chances of her calling him.

The tenth tip is that a man should never talk bad about a woman's guy friends especially if he hasn't met them and doesn't know her very well, as this is the fastest way for her to mark him as "insecure".

Pakistan spy agency 'had role in planning Mumbai attacks'

LONDON: Pakistan's main spy agency played a major role in helping prepare the 2008 Mumbai attacks, one of the planners of the bloodbath has told Indian interrogators, a report said on Tuesday.

David Headley, who confessed to surveying targets for the attacks that left 166 people dead in November 2008, made detailed claims about support from the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, said Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Headley described dozens of meetings between officers of the ISI and senior militants from Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT), said the paper, citing a 109-page Indian government report into his interrogation.

India blames LeT -- a banned, Pakistan-based Islamist group -- for masterminding the Mumbai attacks.

The Guardian said Headley claimed the ISI was attempting to strengthen militant organisations with links to the Pakistani state which were being marginalised by more extreme groups.

Headley, the son of a former Pakistani diplomat and a white American woman, claimed that at least two of his missions were partly paid for by the ISI and that he regularly reported to the spy agency, said the British daily.

"The ISI... had no ambiguity in understanding the necessity to strike India," Headley is cited as telling the Indian investigators, who reportedly interviewed him over 34 hours in the US in June.

The documents suggest however that the ISI's supervision of the militants was often chaotic and that most senior officers in the agency may have been unaware of the scale of the attacks before they were launched, added the paper.

An ISI spokesman told the Guardian that accusations of the agency's involvement in the Mumbai attacks were "baseless."

In the attacks, 10 heavily-armed gunmen launched a three-day assault on prime targets in India's financial capital.

Headley, who changed his name from Daood Gilani, confessed to his role in plotting the attacks after being arrested in the US.

In exchange for pleading guilty to the attacks, US prosecutors agreed he would not face extradition to India or the death penalty.

Girls go for shot to delay early puberty

What is puberty ?
Puberty (say: pyoo-ber-tee) is the name for the time when your body begins to develop and change as you move from kid to adult. We're talking about stuff like girls developing breasts and boys starting to look more like men. During puberty, your body will grow faster than at any other time in your life, except for when you were a baby.

Heard of the shot that delays puberty? Well, many worried parents in the city have, and are now opting for these growth hormone injections for their child to either delay the early onset of menstrual cycle or stop monthly periods for a couple of years. Not exactly a fad, the medication appears to be a rather expensive mechanism to combat a disturbing urban health reality — of girls as young as 8 and 9 attaining puberty.

Considered to be a disorder called 'precocious puberty', city doctors have not only seen a rise in this condition in the last couple of years but in the number of takers of this medical treatment which costs Rs 3,500-4,000 a month. "We get 5-6 such cases of early puberty a month. These girls mostly aged between 5-8 years are managed by GnRH analogues, basically an injection, to control the hormone levels and postpone the menstrual cycle till they grow up to 10 years or more. This treatment is used after ruling out other organic causes for this disorder (early puberty)," says Prof Rakesh Kumar Sahay, Osmania Medical College. Sahay, who is also secretary of Endocrine Society of India, further stated that there are no significant side effects of this treatment.

UAE court says okay to wife-beating

ABU DHABI (UAE): A man can beat his wife and young children, as long as he leaves no marks on the body, UAE's highest court has ruled. Ruling in a case where a man beat up his wife and adult daughter, the court took exception to the cuts and bruises he caused.

The decision by the Federal Supreme Court shows the strong influence of Islamic law in the Emirates, which, in fact, is less conservative than some Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, where women are forbidden from driving and travelling without male company.

It said the man was guilty of harming the women but noted that Islamic codes allow for "discipline'' if no marks are left. It added that children who have reached "adulthood'' -- approximately puberty -- cannot be struck.

"Although the (law) permits the husband to use his right (to discipline), he has to abide by the limits of this right," an Abu Dhabi daily quoted chief justice Falah al-Hajeri as saying in the ruling released on Sunday. The man's daughter was 23, hence too old to be disciplined in this fashion, it noted.

Tendulkar scales Mount 14,000 in Tests

In yet another first, India's all time great Sachin Tendulkar on Sunday became the only person to scale the 14,000 peak in Test cricket during their five-day match against Australia.

Needing 27 runs to reach into the landmark, the 37-year-old cut off-spinner Nathan Hauritz through coverpoint for a boundary and accomplish the feat in his 171st Test.

A packed Chinnaswamy Stadium crowd rose and gave the Indian maestro a standing ovation as Australian skipper Ricky Ponting came up to congratulate Tendulkar who is unbeaten on 44.

At 12178, Ponting remains Tendulkar's nearest rival but the Aussie is still behind by 1839 runs.

Incidentally, it was during Australia's last tour of India, Tendulkar crossed Brian Lara's record of most number of runs in Tests.

Lara (11953) occupies the third spot in the elite list of most runs in Test career as his position remains to be in danger with Indian batsman Rahul Dravid (11581) closing in on the gap.

Tendulkar also became the highest Test run-getter at Chinnaswamy Stadium scoring in excess of 600, eclipsing Sunil Gavaskar's total.

Omkar Singh and Deepak Sharma narrowly missed out on a gold medal in the 50 metres pistol pair event, shooting seven points behind Singapore’s Gai Bin and Lim Swee Hon to collect a silver medal.

The three medals take India’s tally to seven in the even so far with weight lifters Sonia Chanu and Suken Dey winning silver medals while Sandhya Rani and V Srinivas Rao won bronze. The hosts are level with Australia in the medals table but the later has bagged four gold medals compared to India’s two.

There are 18 gold medals up for grabs on Day 2 of the CWG with five in swimming, four in shooting, three each in cycling and wrestling, two in weightlifting and one in artistic gymnastics. India has a busy schedule throughout the day with the most glamorous contest being in Tennis when Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes come together to take on Sri Lankan pair of Dineshkanthan and Jayawickreme in the first round of doubles.

India Wins The First Test

MOHALI: VVS Laxman battled with severe back pain and alone take India to a memorable victory over Australia with unbeaten 73 in the first Test on Tuesday.

Laxman, who reserved his best for the Australians, played almost a lone hand in India's run chase of 216 as his experienced colleagues fell to poor shot selection and umpiring error as he guided India to one of its most memorable Test victories.

Sachin Tendulkar was the second highest Indian scorer with 38 while young Ishant Sharma contributed a valuable 31 in the Test which went down the wire.

With the victory today, India took 1-0 lead in the series and retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy with their seventh highest run chase in history.

The the second and final Test starting in Bangalore from October 9.

Laxman, who used runners in both of India's innings, and Ishant shared an 81-run stand for the ninth wicket from 131 balls and that ensured India achieve what looked impossible when they were looking down the barrel at 124 for eight at one stage.

However with Ishant given a debatable leg before decision by umpire Ian Gould, it was a tense last 15 minutes for the Indian supporters at the PCA Stadium before Laxman and Pragyan Ojha (five not out) took India to the magic score of 216.

India sealed victory with two leg byes got by Pragyan Ojha off Johnson to the wild celebrations at the dressing room and the stands.

Laxman faced just 79 balls for his unbeaten 73 which he made with the help of eight fours while Ishant consumed 92 balls for his 31.

It was indeed a 'Very Very Special' knock from a man who was not even being able to walk properly for the last two days due to back spasms. Each and every of those 73 runs he scored has worth its weight in gold.

Laxman batted only in the manner he is capable of. The back foot punches through the cover, the short-arm pulls, extra second he takes while hitting those silken boundaries, those supple wrists and egging the Ishant Sharmas and Pragyan Ojhas to run the singles and twos was worth a sight.

But for Ishant, Laxman would not have completed the magnificent win. Having bowled 14 no-balls, being down with a hamstring injury, Ishant may have scored the most significant 31 runs in his career.

When some of the top-order batsman lacked stomach for fight, Ishant concentrated like a saint to give Laxman the necessary support that he needed to pull off a Herculean act.

Full Scorecard.

4000-year-old Aryan city discovered in Russia

Russian archaeologists have unearthed some ancient and virtually unknown settlements which they believe were built by the original Aryan race about 4000 years ago.

According to the team which has discovered 20 of the spiral-shaped settlements in remote part of Russia steppe in southern Siberia bordering Kazakhstan, the buildings date back to the beginning of Western civilisation in Europe.

The Bronze-age settlements, the experts said, could have been built shortly after the Great Pyramid some 4000 years ago by the original Aryan race whose swastika symbol was later adopted by the Nazis in the 1930s.

TV historian Bettany Hughes, who explored the desolate part of the Russian steppe for BBC programme 'Tracking The Aryans', said: "Potentially, this could rival ancient Greece in the age of the heroes."

"Because I have written a lot about the Bronze Age world, there always seemed to be this huge missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle," Hughes was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

She said: "We are all told that there is this kind of mother tongue, proto-Indo-European, from which all the languages we know emerge.

"I was very excited to hear on the archaeological grapevine that in exactly the period I am an expert in, this whole new Bronze Age civilisation had been discovered on the steppe of southern Siberia."

The remains of the ancient city were explored for the first time around 20 years ago shortly after then Soviet officials relaxed strict laws banning non-military aerial photography.

But because of the region is so remote the incredible cities have remained virtually unknown to the rest of Europe until now, according to the archaeologists

They are about the same size as several of the city states of ancient Greece and would have housed between 1,000 and 200 people, they said.

Hughes was driven to the vast region by the expedition's chief archaeologist Professor Gennady Zdanovich who pointed to the cities that were buried in the ground beneath them.

The Aryan's language has been identified as the precursor to a number of modern European tongues. English uses many similar words such as brother, oxen and guest which have all been tracked to the Aryans.

Finally, Delhi dazzles at CWG opening ceremony

NEW DELHI: In the end, it turned out like a perfect Indian wedding. Shrugging off all the heartburns, last-minute snafus and accompanying chaos, everything fell into place; and it left both the baraatis and the dulhanwaalahs, with huge smiles on their faces.

The next few days will tell us if the honeymoon too, if not the marriage itself, will be as successful.

A festive crowd of almost 60,000 packed the stadium and lustily cheered through the ceremony. They cheered former President A P J Abdul Kalam (who got the biggest hand), UPA chief Sonia Gandhi, Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit and other luminaries. They cheered the performers. They gave a standing ovation to the Indian contingent. And, in a truly moving moment that warmed the hearts of even the most cynical, they reserved the second-biggest round of applause for the Pakistani contingent.Read More.....
