36 dead in Mali stadium stampede

BAMAKO: At least 36 people were killed and over 110 others injured in an overnight stampede at a stadium in Mali's capital.

Thousands of people had gathered at the Modibo Keita stadium in Bamako to listen to an Islamic preacher, who was speaking as part of the Muslim festival of Maouloud, when the stampede started.

There was no official explanation for the stampede but one witness told Reuters it started when people surged forward to touch the preacher for good luck. Gates and fences around the stadium were in tatters on Tuesday morning.

Adama Mary Traore, a spokesman for the Gabriel Toure hospital, where many of the bodies and injured were taken, said at least 36 people had been killed and 112 others had been injured, two seriously.

The witness said the death toll could be as high as 44. An official involved in the organization of the event said nearly all those killed were women.

Crowds of people gathered at the hospital morgue overnight and on Tuesday morning to identify bodies.

Some had complained about the lack of security at the event, Traore said, but the situation was calm on Tuesday afternoon as dozens of people stood silently waiting for the bodies to be released for burial.

At least 26 people were killed during Maouloud last year in a stampede near a mosque in Mali's northern desert city of Timbuktu

Current age 30 years 237 days

Major teams Netherlands, Canterbury, Essex, Mashonaland Eagles, Tasmania, Western Province

Nickname Tendo

Batting style Right-hand bat

Bowling style Right-arm medium-fast

Height 5 ft 11 in

Nicknamed Tendo, Ryan has become one of the most popular players on the county circuit over the last few years as a combative all-rounder. Essex’s fortunes have risen along with the cricketer himself, and both are aiming to build on their successes in 2009.

This year is also an exciting one for the Netherlands, for whom he will be representing in the ICC World Twenty20.

Ryan Neil ten Doeschate (born 30 June 1980) is a South African-born cricketer who plays internationally for the Netherlands due to his Dutch ancestry. He has played cricket for Essex since 2003.

He matriculated at Fairbairn College in Goodwood, near Cape Town in 1998. Whilst at school, he excelled at both rugby and cricket.

As of 22nd February 2011, ten Doeschate has a One-Day International batting average of 71.21 from 27 matches. This is presently the highest batting average in ODI cricket by a batsman with more than 20 innings, a considerable margin ahead of second place (Hashim Amla, who averages 59.88), although his average is substantially skewed by the fact that the Netherlands seldom plays ODIs against top teams (only four of ten Doeschate's innings have been against test-playing nations). Nevertheless, his record against Test playing nations is still very good, and he holds the record for the highest individual innings by a player from an Associate Nation playing against a Test Nation, 119, scored in Nagpur against England during the 2011 World Cup. He also possesses a List A average of 46.87, which is presently the 12th highest in history; and, since it was largely attained in English and South African domestic competition, is much less skewed than his ODI average.

Ten Doeschate was discovered by Essex when they went on a pre-season tour of South Africa. His all-round abilities for Western Province caught their eyes. He is qualified to play county cricket by virtue of holding EU citizenship. He is a big-hitting right-handed batsman and he bowls right-arm medium-fast deliveries.

AHMEDABAD: Thirty-one people were today convicted and 63 others, including the main accused Maulvi Umarji, were acquitted by a special court here in the 2002 Godhra train burning incident that left 59 people dead and triggered violence in Gujarat that had claimed the lives of over 1200 people, mainly Muslims.

The sentencing would be pronounced on February 25 after arguments on the quantum of punishment by the Special Court that accepted the theory of conspiracy behind the burning of the coach of Sabarmati Express carrying kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya.

HIV+ maid had sex with 100 men: Doc

MUMBAI: A doctor treating HIV-positive patients has claimed that one of his patients has indulged in sexual relations with more than 100 partners "to take revenge" for her condition.

Dr I S Gilada, who heads an AIDS clinic at Grant Road, told TOI that a 29-year-old woman from the Western suburbs has been visiting him since the past two months.

While counselling her, the doctor learnt that she not only has multiple partners, but hunts for them with a vengeance to spread the virus she contracted through her husband.

"She was brought to us by her sister, who herself is HIV positive," said Gilada. "We found out that she had learnt of her husband's HIV-positive status in 2005, and that he had transmitted the disease to her as well. Although she divorced him, she couldn't come to terms with the fact that he had knowingly passed on the virus to her," he said.

Gilada said that during the counselling sessions, the woman, who works as a maid, claimed she has had more than 300 sexual encounters with 100 men over the past three years.

"She admitted to frequent encounters with men ranging from her employers and their relatives, to the liftman and students - all of whom have had unprotected sex with her," said Gilada.

When asked about the case, Dr S S Kudalkar, president at the Mumbai District AIDS Control Society ( MDACS), said the organization would investigate the matter.

"We will talk to the clinic and investigate the case. If it is true, then we will counsel the woman," he said. "HIV is not just a disease of the virus, it is also a disease of human behaviour. The National AIDS Control Organisation ( NACO) has mandated pre-test and post-test counselling to curb patients from forging sexual contacts with multiple partners," said Dr Kudalkar.

Pakistani singer Rahat Ali Khan, fined Rs 15 lakh

NEW DELHI: Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his manager Maroof have been fined Rs 15 lakh in connection with the recovery undeclared foreign currency from them at the airport in Delhi on February 13.

Rahat and his 16-member troupe were detained for allegedly carrying $1.24 lakh (about Rs. 60 lakh) of undeclared foreign currency at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.

As per norms, no one can carry beyond $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in other instruments. A person has to declare the amount if he is carrying more than this to the Customs Department.

On Saturday, the duo was slapped with charges under Foreign Exchange Management Act and Customs Act by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

They will be allowed to leave the country after they pay the penalty. The foreign exchange will remain confiscated, sources said.

Rahat was released after the Pakistan High Commission had assured that he will cooperate with the probe. Pakistan interior minister Rahman Malik had thanked home minister P Chidambaram for Rahat's release.

Investigating agencies have also questioned a number of other persons in the case.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai sleuths have swooped down on the premises of Eyeline Telefilm and Events, owned by Chitresh Shrivastava, elder brother of Bollywood singer Aadesh Shrivastava. Sources privy to the investigations claimed that during the searches the sleuths found Rs 51 lakh in cash which was seized. They also recovered some documents which could be helpful in the probe being carried out by the DRI.

As per norms, no one can carry beyond $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in other instruments. A person has to declare the amount if he is carrying more than this to the Customs Department.

According to sources, the payments by an event manager to Rahat were made in Indian currency and US dollars and these people were allegedly found converting the dollars to Indian rupees "through unauthorised channels".
