India clean sweep ODI series against Kiwis

NEW DELHI: Indian bowlers fired in unison to reduce New Zealand to their lowest ever total against the hosts, as India beat New Zealand by 8 wickets to clinch the series 5-0 in Chennai on Friday.

This is India's first whitewash at home since a 5-0 win against England in 2008.

Chasing a mere 104-run target, India lost their two in-form batsmen in the form of Gambhir and Virat Kholi early.

However, a brilliant partnership between Yuvraj (42) and Parthiv Patel (56) guided India to an easy win.

Nothing went right for New Zealand after captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night game at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Fast bowler Praveen Kumar struck in the first over, removing Martin Guptill with his fourth delivery before left-arm paceman Ashish Nehra dismissed Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor in successive overs.

India's spinners then got into action, accounting for the rest of the seven wickets to fall.

The New Zealand batsmen struggled in overcast conditions with a 43-run stand by Jamie How (23) and Scott Styris (24) being the only decent effort.
