Suchitra Mitra (19th September, 1924 – 3rd January, 2011) was an Indian singer-composer, and a well respected exponent of Rabindra Sangeet or the songs of Bengal’s poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore. As an academic she remained a Professor and the Head of ‘Rabindra Sangeet Department’ at the Rabindra Bharati University for many years. She has also done playback singing and acted in a Bengali films as well and for many years remained associated with IPTA
She studied at the Scottish Church College , the University of Calcutta and at Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal, India. She has also remained the Sheriff of Kolkata (2001).Legendary Rabindra Sangeet exponent Suchitra Mitra died at her residence(kolkata) here Monday following a cardiac arrest, family sources said. She was 86.
Mitra died around 1.30 p.m. while she was having lunch.
Using Rabindra Nath Tagore's expression, she said: "Bhora Thak Sriti Shudhaye Bidayer Patro Khani" (Let the cup of memory be filled with her sweet remembrance)
Daughter of litterateur Saurindra Mohan Mukherjee, she received her first lessons from eminent singer-composer Pankaj Mullick and then went to Santiniketan with a scholarship.
Her singing skills were sharpened under the guidance of experts like Shantidev Ghosh and Shailajaranjan Mazumdar. She made her first recording in 1945.
Her rendition of Tagore songs like "Gramchara oi Ranga Matir Path", "Krishnakai", "Hridayer ekul okul du kul bheshe jai" have capitavated music lovers for decades.
Mitra received the Padma Shri in 1973.
