Sunday was Delhi's coldest day in 42 year

NEW DELHI: Delhiites finally got a chance to thaw after three days, with pleasant sunshine on Monday afternoon raising the maximum temperature to a slightly more tolerable 15.6 degrees Celsius. The bright afternoon was appreciated all the more as it came after a sunless Sunday, which was the coldest day in Delhi at least since 1969. Safdarjung had recorded 11 degrees on Sunday, the lowest maximum in the past 42 years.

Said R K Jenamani, director in-charge, IGI Met, "Delhi's official Met data is generated at Safdarjung where a low maximum of 11 degrees hasn't been recorded at least since 1969, before which data of lowest maximum temperatures weren't maintained. At Palam, the maximum had dipped to 10 degrees in 2003. However, keeping both maximum and minimum in mind, and data from both Safdarjung and Palam, Delhi witnessed its coldest day on Sunday in 42 years."

Sunday's cold wave was triggered by dense fog over large parts of northwest India. Chandigarh on Monday recorded a maximum of 7.7 degrees Celsius.
